BPL Newsletter – Autumn 2024

Welcome to the latest edition of the BPL newsletter!

Over the last few weeks, we’ve had lots going on across our sites, including birthday celebrations at Hoyland Leisure Centre, charity fundraising events and National Fitness Day!

We’ve also been out and about in our local communities, celebrated our successes with some national award nominations, hosted a Halloween pool party and half term holiday camp and launched our Christmas events programme.

Some of our staff members had a brilliant time taking part in the Great BPL Bake Off!

Everyone put so much effort in and produced some incredible bakes.

Well done to all those who took part!

As part of Hoyland Leisure Centre’s 50th birthday celebrations, our amazing team – Paul, Jon, Melv, Jo, Luke, Lauren, Becky and Sabrina – took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.

This included a 24.8 mile round trip, with a 1585m ascent, covering the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

Huge congratulations to the team who completed the challenge in less than 12 hours! 

Good for Customers

Our Kurling group at Dorothy Hyman Sports Centre had a great time celebrating the 95th birthday of one of its members, George Morgan.

George was surprised with cards, presents, a cake and balloon, with everyone also enjoying a celebration buffet after their Kurling session.

BPL’s Community Sports Development Officer Connor Pickles said: “We were so pleased to be able to help George celebrate his birthday here at Dorothy Hyman. It’s been fantastic.”

The Metrodome transformed into a haunted haven for our Halloween party, which even featured an appearance from Beetlejuice!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a frightfully fun time!

Our exercise specialist Millie Powles was on hand to support members at Your Space Pontefract with their health and wellbeing.

Millie delivered health checks including BMI, metabolic age and blood pressure assessments as part of our commitment to helping our customers feel good.

Across the organisation, we recognise the importance of supporting not only physical health but also mental health and overall wellness.

As part of our commitment, some of our amazing staff and members at Your Space Bircotes shared uplifting and encouraging messages on social media on World Mental Health Day.

The festive season will soon be upon us and there’s no better way to celebrate than by joining us at Barnsley Metrodome!

This year, we have a range of events from Christmas party nights to festive afternoon teas, kids’ festive breakfasts and our unforgettable New Year’s Eve party night!

Great Delivery

We were proud to attend the ukactive Awards in Birmingham recently, where we were shortlisted for two awards; Best Membership Campaign and the Outstanding Individual Leadership Award for our Chief Executive Michael Hirst.

We had a great night celebrating the best of the fitness and leisure sector!

We’re looking forward to the National Fitness Awards on November 29th, where our marketing team is shortlisted for the Best Membership Campaign Award.

The winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony at the Athena in Leicester, hosted by one of Britain’s most famous athletes, Derek Redmond.

Kilton Forest Golf Course has been awarded a 5 star hygiene rating following an inspection.

Congratulations to all the team for maintaining top notch standards!

BPL has received the NCA Young Carer Friendly Award for 2024/25.

Angie Dainty accepted the award on behalf of BPL from the Nottinghamshire Carers Association.

This award recognises our commitment in identifying and supporting young carers within our service.

Good for All

Hoyland Leisure Centre celebrated its 50th birthday with a fun filled day of activities, which also raised money for Weston Park Cancer Charity.

Activities included a themed aerobics class, fun swims and a cake sale.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us and helped us raise a fantastic £1,346.63 for the charity.

Thanks to all our customers, staff and the local community who baked, brought cakes in or donated money to our Macmillan Coffee Morning at Your Space Metrodome. Together, we raised £160.15.

BPL’s Connor Pickles and Anne Nixon were proud to recently attend the Mayor’s Charity Ball, where they enjoyed a wonderful evening with community partners, while also raising money for charity.

Once again this year, we supported National Fitness Day by opening our facilities free of charge to showcase our clubs and the benefits of health and fitness to the local community.

A big thank you to everyone who got involved!

A group of our Metrodome colleagues were presented with a cheque by Barnsley FC players Stephen Humphrys and Jackson Smith at Oakwell for their incredible fundraising efforts in aid of Barnsley Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Rob, Isabelle, Maddie, Nicole and Emily raised £2,181 by swimming 1.5km in Derwent Water earlier this year.

We enjoyed delivering HAF camps over the summer holidays to local kids at Your Space Metrodome, Hoyland, Royston and Dorothy Hyman.

From swimming to sports, games and activities, it was an action-packed few weeks of fun and forming new friendships.

Thank you to everyone from Mansfield Town Football Club for attending our annual partnership golf day.

It was an amazing day, which raised £430 for Weston Park Cancer Charity.

Well done to our staff member Owen who completed the Great North Run in 1 hour, 48 minutes!

Owen was raising money for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) – a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored him!

We had an amazing few days at our October half term holiday sports club!

Everyone who attended enjoyed taking part in a range of fun games and sporting activities at Dorothy Hyman Sports Centre.
